The event was founded in 1980, 46 years ago, but was discontinued in 1983 and then was only edition in 1993. In 2014, the tournament was announced to return to the elite women’s professional tour. The 2019 Hong Kong Open was canceled due to the 2019 Hong Kong protests. In 2020 - 2021, the tournament was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the event was not held after the suspension of all WTA tournaments in China, including Hong Kong, over concern about Shuai PENG.
