Rio Open

The first edition of the event was in 2014, 12 years ago. It is the first ATP Tour 500 tournament in Brazilian history and the biggest tennis tournament in South America. Since 2017, the event has had a new format as the only ATP tournament. It was a strategic decision by organizers to provide more comfort for athletes and the audience. In 2020, the tournament became the first clay-court ATP Tour event to offer electronic line calling. Also, in 2020, the event was one of the last tournaments played before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the tournament was canceled because of Brazil's spike in COVID-19 cases.
